Bird Science Olympiad (also called BirdSO) was founded in December 2020 by a group of enthusiastic and experienced SciOly competitors and alumni in Southern California. Its mission was to provide students with a high-quality competition experience during a mostly virtual season. By 2022, Bird shifted to at-your-school satellite competitions and in-person tournaments, the last of which was hosted by USC.
