Design Highlights

  • The original questions are hand-written by curriculum specialists. (They are not algorithm-generated or “crowd-sourced”.) In addition, they are carefully aligned, edited and reviewed by EducAide Software, which has 20 years of experience developing questions for state standards.
  • The questions are paired for review, quizzes make-up tests, etc. You can see this in the sample documents above. This first document, Form A, contains IM original questions. The second document, Form B, contains the EducAide original paired questions. This provides a nice balance between repetition and variety and also helps with test security, as the two questions, which are close in difficulty and style, can be assigned to different students and graded the same way.
Note: Problem-Attic has an option called “parallel forms” that takes advantage of the paired questions. You can very quickly create pre- and post-tests, makeup tests, forms A and B, etc. More details are here.
  • The questions are rich with graphics and interesting scenarios, including real-world data. With the editor, you can use all of this as stimulus for new questions. The process is facilitated with a button in the editor labeled “Duplicate”. Also, Problem-Attic is smart enough not to repeat certain figures or text which is marked as an “intro”, if it appears in successive questions.

Notes

Half the questions were released by Illustrative Mathematics as practice questions for grades 6–12. The other half are original, written by EducAide Software (the maker of Problem-Attic). For convenience, each of the IM source questions is included immediately before EducAide's, so you can see the pairing. (You can think of the IM source questions as the “odds” and EducAide's questions as the “evens”.) The result: all of the IM practice questions for middle school and high school are doubled!

Illustrative Mathematics is based at the University of Arizona and headed by William McCallum, one of the lead writers of the Common Core State Standards. Described as “a community of educators dedicated to the coherent learning of mathematics”, Illustrative Mathematics has produced an “extensive and carefully vetted collection of instructional and assessment tasks that have been aligned with CCSS.”

This is the second of two banks which originate with Illustrative Mathematics. The first bank, IM Curriculum and CCSS Tasks, contains lessons and practice questions for grades K–12 released by Illustrative Mathematics.
