Student Privacy and the Problem-Attic Test Scanner

Problem-Attic is a web-based program for teachers. (There is no account creation or sign-up by students.) Teachers use the program to create, assign, and score tests. In the process, some personally identifiable information (PII) is collected by EducAide Software, the developer of Problem-Attic. For more details, please see our Privacy Policy, which is posted here: www.problem-attic.com/privacy.

One of the options in Problem-Attic is to put a barcode on printed test pages so that students may scan their work and submit it to their teacher. The scanning is done with the camera on a phone, tablet, or other device. It requires students to download and install an app (iOS or Android) called the Problem-Attic Test Scanner.

The Test Scanner does not require students to create an account or go through any registration process. But the app does require students to sign in through their existing Google Classroom or ClassLink account. By signing in, students are bound by those companies' privacy policies. For more information, see policies.google.com/privacy and classlink.com/company/privacy.

To manage the sign-in process, and then to scan test pages and upload images, EducAide must collect some PII from students. In the following paragraphs, we describe the information and explain how it is used, stored, and deleted.

  1. EducAide’s collection of PII is limited to first and last name and email address. EducAide does not collect any phone number, IP address, MAC address, geo location, or any other identifying information about the student or the device used for scanning.

  2. EducAide does not make any use of student names and email addresses except: (i) to associate scores on a test with particular students; and (ii) to email scores to the respective students, if requested by the teacher.

  3. EducAide never asks teachers to upload class rosters, and it does not connect to any student information system (SIS). Furthermore, it does not track students’ use of the internet with cookies or other identifiers, and it does not maintain any individual student records. For these reasons, test scores and uploaded images are effectively anonymized. They are reported to and understandable by the teacher (or student) but not known to EducAide.

  4. Test scores and any other data which EducAide collects is used solely for the purpose of improving Problem-Attic and the Test Scanner and the accuracy and reliability of test questions. EducAide never sells or trades on email addresses or other student data, and EducAide never uses it to market any product or service to students.

  5. All PII that EducAide collects is encrypted and stored on secure web servers, according to industry best practices. The teachers who create and deliver tests and receive images from the Problem-Attic Test Scanner may delete the information at any time. Regardless of what action is taken by the teacher, the information is automatically deleted from the Problem-Attic database after 180 days.
